On Jan. 29, 2026, the West Texas VA Health Care System (WTVAHCS) and the Big Spring community united in a heartfelt celebration of World War II Navy Veteran JL Stevens, honoring his remarkable milestone—his 100th birthday. A longtime resident of Big Spring, Stevens is a living testament to a pivotal chapter in American history.

Born in 1926 in Ada, Okla., Stevens grew up in a hardworking ranching family and enlisted in the Navy at 17, inspired by his older brother. After rigorous boot camp training in Southern California, he served as a Gunner’s Mate aboard the destroyer USS Hambleton (DD 455), critical to the war efforts in both Europe and the Pacific theater.

Stevens participated in the historic D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944, where he helped escort landing vessels to Omaha Beach and witnessed the bravery of countless Americans fighting for freedom. He later experienced the intense Okinawa campaign, enduring relentless kamikaze attacks and typhoons that tested the resolve of every sailor.

Reflecting on service and sacrifice

<img decoding="async" height="548" width="730" src="https://news.va.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2026/02/JL003_r2-scaled.jpg?w=730" alt="An elderly veteran in a military cap salutes, supported by two men, in front of a vintage U.S. Air Force plane at a museum.

Reflecting on his service during the celebration, Stevens humbly stated, “I never thought of myself as a hero. I just did what I was asked to do for my country and for the men beside me. We all depended on each other, and I’m grateful I was able to come home.” His remarks resonated with attendees, highlighting the humility that characterized both his military service and his century of life.

Stevens’ ship also played a pivotal role in marking the end of World War II. After being reassigned to the Pacific theater, the Hambleton escorted the USS Missouri into Tokyo Bay for the formal surrender ceremony on Sept. 2, 1945. From the nearby waters, Stevens and his fellow sailors witnessed Supreme Allied Commander General Douglas MacArthur and other leaders sign the Instrument of Surrender, symbolizing the conclusion of the conflict—a triumphant moment reflecting the sacrifices made by millions.

After the war, Stevens returned home to a fulfilling life as a carpenter, helping build homes and strong community ties in Big Spring, and even working to build the original VA hospital, now known as the George H. O’Brien, Jr. VA Medical Center.

Robert Hoff, acting director of the WTVAHCS, delivered heartfelt remarks honoring Stevens’ extraordinary life. He stated, “Today we honor not just Mr. Stevens’ century of life, but the legacy of service and patriotism he embodies. His courage helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today, and it’s our privilege to ensure Veterans like him receive the care they deserve.”

Following Hoff’s speech, he presented a personal letter and challenge coin on behalf of Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins.

The celebration transcended a mere birthday gathering, transforming into a tribute to duty, sacrifice and unity. The collaboration between the WTVAHCS and the Big Spring community showcased the importance of honoring those who paved the way for future generations.

On Jan. 29, 2026, Big Spring celebrated not just a birthday but also a legacy.

VA recently announced a new regulation that will lead to faster decisions and quicker payments for certain types of survivors’ claims.

Previously, VA was required to address claims for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and Survivors Pension separately, resulting in a longer claims process, as a formal decision was required for both benefits.

With this change, effective Feb. 23, VA will pay the higher of the two benefits, which is generally DIC—without delaying the process to develop the lesser benefit.

“This commonsense change streamlines the survivors claims process, reduces administrative burdens and delivers quicker decisions to beneficiaries during challenging times,’” said VA Secretary Doug Collins.

DIC is a tax-free monthly monetary benefit paid to eligible surviving spouses, children and parents of a service member who died in the line of duty or Veterans who died from service-connected injuries or illnesses. Survivors Pension offers tax-free monthly payments to qualified surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of wartime Veterans who meet certain income and net worth limits set by Congress.

In most instances, DIC provides a greater economic benefit than Survivors Pension. This is not the case if all the following conditions are met:

The claimant is the Veteran’s surviving spouse,

Has no dependents,

Is residing in a nursing home,

Has applied for or is currently receiving Medicaid.

If all these criteria are met, Survivors Pension―rather than DIC―will be awarded, and the DIC claim will not be further developed.

For more information, contact the VA benefits hotline on 800-827-1000.

Live Whole Health #305: Give your shoulders a little love

I often carry my stress in my shoulders and upper back. Colder weather and sitting in front of a computer for many hours a day certainly doesn’t help. The good news is that even just a few minutes of movement at a time can help relieve both the stress and the muscle tightness in your back and shoulders.

Increase blood flow and reduce stiffness

Gentle movement can change position and perspective, which can lead to increasing blood flow and reducing the stiffness and cramping that can come with being in one position for too long.

Give your shoulders and upper back a little love with this short practice. Dr. Theresa Larson, DPT, introduces the “Belly Down, I, T, Y, W” drill that requires only the weight of your arms to make a gentle but significant impact in your shoulders and back.

Take your time and go easy on yourself, as this can be a challenging but low-impact exercise.

Larson guides this movement from a belly down position on the floor and also gives options for doing it seated or standing using cables or bands.

Moving your body is loving your body!

Linking Veterans and families to benefits, covered services and VA resources

VA recently reached a major milestone as it welcomed its one-millionth beneficiary of the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA). As enrollment in CHAMPVA continues to grow, VA is focused on helping every eligible spouse, dependent and survivor understand what CHAMPVA offers and how to use their benefits.

One of the simplest ways to stay in the know is by using the CHAMPVA mobile app, which puts essential information right at beneficiaries’ fingertips, including:

Quick access to benefit information, including eligibility and how CHAMPVA and other family member programs work.

Covered services and medications, allowing you to check covered medications, services and procedure codes before you receive care.

VA resource locator to find VA medical centers, clinics, pharmacies and essential support websites, phone numbers and addresses.

Links to file and manage claims.

“Reaching one million CHAMPVA beneficiaries is a powerful reminder of how many Veteran families rely on this program,” said Dave Fennell, director of Veteran and Family Member Programs. “We want to make sure every family member knows what CHAMPVA offers and has easy access to the information they need to use their benefits with confidence.”

Where to download

The CHAMPVA app is available at no cost on both platforms.

Download on the Apple App Store.

Get it on Google Play.

About CHAMPVA

CHAMPVA is a VA health program for spouses, dependents and survivors of Veterans who meet eligibility requirements. When you enroll in CHAMPVA, VA shares the cost of services like doctor visits, prescriptions and medical supplies, helping reduce out-of-pocket expenses. CHAMPVA gives families peace of mind by providing dependable health coverage in recognition of a Veteran’s service.

Learn more about CHAMPVA eligibility and benefits.

All items to Veterans in need

During the season of giving, the patrons of Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) did their part and collected more than 7,000 donated items at PatriotStores throughout VA. As part of VCS’s 12 Days of Holidays campaign, VCS encouraged patrons to buy essential items in the PatriotStore and leave them in convenient donation boxes, with items all going to Veterans in need.

Sixteen Canteens received donations of 100 units or more, with the PatriotStore in Clarksburg, W.V. leading the way, receiving 1,404 items.

The donation drive kicked off on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 2. Donated items included backpacks, blankets, shoes, socks, cold-weather clothing, personal hygiene items and non-perishable foods.

“On Giving Tuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back, the VCS launched an incredible campaign that mobilized many generous patrons to support Veterans served by The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Homeless Program,” said Dr. Matthew Eitutis, acting director, VA Center for Development & Civic Engagement. “Thanks to the initiative of VCS and the remarkable generosity of its patrons, over 7,000 items were donated. It is truly commendable that during the holiday season, the VCS team prioritized giving back to our nation’s heroes through this highly successful campaign.”

Vietnam-era Veteran Jim Barrante, a native of Erie County, Pa., who currently lives in Germany, sent a check for $200 to be used to purchase needed items at the Erie VA Canteen.

“Keeping our Veterans warm for those residing up north this time of the year is most important,” Barrante said. “We Veterans support one another and especially the homeless, who need help all year around—not just Christmas.”

A home cooked meal with a rich, chocolatey dessert

Valentine’s Day brings thoughts of love, happy endings and chocolate. It’s easy to find greeting cards with sentimental messages, romantic comedies on TV, and of course heart-shaped boxes of chocolates.

As you think about how you’ll celebrate Valentine’s, consider avoiding the fancy dinner reservation to make a delicious meal at home. You’ll save money and reduce saturated fat, sodium (salt) and calories. Plus, a home-cooked meal makes your special someone feel even more special.

Healthy Valentine’s Day tips

Make your own meal.

Add colorful fruits and vegetables. These provide fiber that helps control blood glucose (sugar), manage weight and lower cholesterol.

Choose dark chocolate for dessert. Dark chocolate is healthier for heart and gut health compared to milk chocolate. It’s also rich in antioxidants and minerals. Choose 70% cocoa or higher for more health benefits.

Sample menu

Braised cod and green beans with pesto.

Bright beet and orange salad.

Flourless black bean brownies.

By cooking at home, you can create a tasty, healthy meal and stay on track with your New Year’s health goals.

VA offers resources like recipes, cookbooks and cooking videos. VA also provides Healthy Teaching Kitchen (HTK) classes to learn healthy cooking methods.

Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Lead Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Evan Messegee knows firsthand that when employees feel valued and supported, they’re empowered to do their best work. As Lead ICT, Messegee provides quality, compassionate care to Veterans at the Dallas VA Medical Center (VAMC) while working with a supportive VA team that puts people first. VA’s ICT Program provides a unique opportunity for former corpsmen and medics to take on health care support roles without any additional licensure—and get paid for it. Read on to learn more about Evan Messegee’s career journey and hear why he’d, “100% be happy to work for VA” after he graduates from his physician assistant program.

How did you hear about the ICT program?

“As you’re getting out of the military, the Department of Defense (DoD) has you participate in Soldier for Life-Transition Assistance Program (SFL-TAP) classes to help you prepare for civilian life. I was actually considering re-enlisting because I was having trouble finding a job, but luckily someone at one of those classes knew about the ICT program and shared the info.”

What’s enticing to you about the ICT program?

“The best part of being a medic is being able to help people, other Veterans. With the ICT program, I’m able to keep using the skills I learned in the military. Some people get out of the military and their skills get rusty, but I’m able to keep practicing and keep growing my skillset. I’m the kind of person who doesn’t want to do the exact same thing every day, and I really like being an ICT because there’s so many different things to do.”

What’s one of the best parts about working at VA?

“I’d say the support of my coworkers. I had some health issues after I separated from the military. I’d only been at VA for about five months and needed to take some time off to focus on my health. I hadn’t accrued much time off yet, so my coworkers generously donated their annual leave. I was able to take care of myself and not stress about my job. This environment is just so supportive and I would 100% be happy to work at VA after I graduate.”

Can you share more about VA’s supportive environment?

“Sure—it amazes me how I get support from so many colleagues here, and these aren’t even people directly on my team. I’ll chat other providers to say, ‘Hey, this patient needs a new prescription’ or ‘This piece of equipment is down’ and then they’ll ask me how to put in an order. Everyone here is willing help or teach, even if it’s not in their job description.”

I see that you’ve progressed to Lead ICT—that’s wonderful! How has VA supported your career growth

“My team is great and has worked with me to accommodate my school schedule. And VA actually has a lot of really great programs to help you further your education and pay you a living stipend.”

Any advice you would give to someone thinking of applying to the ICT program?

“Shoot your shot and apply—even if you feel underqualified. And be patient. Applying for a federal job can be kind of tedious, but it’s so worth it.”

Join our team

Fitness goals

When Ben Shortreed lost his hand in a fireworks accident, his life changed dramatically.

During an impromptu outdoor party, the firework Shortreed was gripping suddenly exploded in his left hand. The result was a mangled mess of skin, bone and muscle, and the decision was made to amputate the hand.

That brought the Marine Veteran to the Prosthetics Service at Milwaukee VA Medical Center.

Working with prosthetist Justin Heck and the team, Shortreed was fitted with a prosthesis and began the long, arduous process of learning how to live life as an upper-limb amputee.

Shortreed started with occupational therapy, learning the basics, including how to dress and bathe.

Heck noted that many upper-limb amputees—who comprise only 8% of all Veteran amputees—reject prostheses because the learning curve can be difficult.

But Shortreed was determined, realizing that learning how to use a prosthesis was as much a mental exercise as a physical challenge.

“There are so many things we take for granted. If I go to Costco, and I see a case of water, I have to think about, ‘How am I going to pick that up?’ he said. “There’s a period where you don’t think you can do something. Then the realization pops, and you’re like, ‘Why couldn’t I? Let’s find a way.’”

Once Shortreed went from “can’t” to “can,” he took to social media to see the great things other amputees were accomplishing. He also met a fellow upper-extremity amputee who was working as a lineman for an electrical company.

“That was helpful for me to see somebody doing the activities that I wanted to do,” he said. “That’s when I started buying in, saying, ‘I can have an almost 100% normal life as an able-bodied person,’” he said.

Continuous practice

Shortreed said he continually practices using his prosthesis.

“I make conscious decisions during my everyday activities,” he said. “I say to myself, ‘Should I do this left-handed?’ I have to force myself to do that.

“This whole process of being an amputee has taught me a lot of patience, and every day, even now, it’s like a puzzle,” he said.

“This (the prosthesis) doesn’t do the work for you,” Heck said. “You have to choose to use it.”

Shortreed certainly uses his. He has been through numerous prostheses in the past five years. He has broken or worn out many of them and keeps pursuing the latest in the technology.

He uses different prostheses—or different attachments to those prostheses—depending upon the activity. His most high-tech myoelectric prosthetic has jointed fingers and is stimulated by the muscles in his forearm. Depending on how he flexes, he can make the hand perform 20 pre-programmed grips. Or he can create other grips as well.

Plus, Shortreed said it makes him look “symmetrical.”

“Yes, it’s a black robotic hand, but I look like a complete man, and from a mental standpoint that’s really important,” he said.

Physical transformation

One of the life-changing decisions Shortreed made after the accident was to focus on his physical health. That led him to the Supra Human program, which goes beyond physical fitness to focus on nutrition, accountability and “mindset reprogramming, a focus on changing your identity and mental approach to achieve long-term success.”

Shortreed’s success in the program led to him being named “Supra Human Man of the Year” earlier this year—quite an accomplishment for someone with one hand.

His plunge into exercise and weight training not only pushed him, but the prosthetics team as well, making sure his “hand” could handle the strain.

“I told Justin (Heck), ‘I want to start working out, so let’s get the right attachment,’” Shortreed said.

He described his first month at the gym as “frightening,” not only because of his prosthesis but also because he hadn’t been in a gym in 20 years.

For amputees, weight-bearing exercises put an inordinate amount of stress on muscles in the residual limb. And for Shortreed, that stress is in the elbow, which is where the sleeve of his prothesis is anchored.

“Anytime I’m doing a pull-down exercise, that weight is pushing back, and it’s all hooked on the elbow,” he said. “So, the elbow holds a lot of weight.”

Constant adjustments

Shortreed’s exercise regimen has meant constant tweaking and adjustments for his prosthesis. Heck said Shortreed is easily in the top 1% of Veterans when it comes to physical activity and the stress put on his prostheses.

While everyone deals with physical changes to their bodies as they age, amputees must also deal with atrophy of the muscles that at one time connected to the missing limbs.

For Shortreed, his commitment to fitness meant additional, dramatic physical changes.

“With Ben’s (Shortreed) workout program, he’s kind of ebbed and flowed as far as his weight and his residual limb size, but it’s also sped up some of the atrophying, which has made it very difficult to fit into a traditional (prosthesis) socket,” Heck said. “So, we’ve done a lot of back and forth (with Ben).”

Heck estimated that Shortreed has been through five different sockets over the past five years because of his body changes.

Working together

Shortreed’s relationship with Heck and his team at the Milwaukee VA has been more than just provider-patient.

“It’s a friendship, and you have to have that relationship,” Shortreed said. “They really dive deep into my lifestyle and activities and design around it.”

Heck and Shortreed agreed that when they first started working together—about four months after the accident—Shortreed was in a “darker place” because he was still struggling to figure out life with one hand.

“We talked about that at length,” Heck said, noting that sometimes prosthetists also have to be psychologists. “We’re empathetic if not always sympathetic. We’re here to push you and to be your cheerleader.

“The relationship that Ben (Shortreed) and I have had over the years has been phenomenal because we’ve been able to be real, just humans… We work together.”

Shortreed agreed.

“Justin (Heck) does a nice job of digging deeper—about my lifestyle, what I want to do—and through that process, we come up with functionality,” he said. “These (prostheses) are really tools to enhance how we live.”

Heck has been impressed with the way Shortreed embraces the technology and works each day to master tasks people with two hands do every day.

“It’s about getting back to whatever normal is for that person,” Heck said. “We ask our patients all the time, ‘What’s your goal? What do you want to do next? And how do we make you motivated to get to that next goal?’”

Embracing the future

Heck and Shortreed are excited about the future of prosthetic technology. Already, some prostheses are being connected to bones and nerves, and Shortreed foresees some sort of neurological link between body and prosthesis.

“It’s like science fiction, but we are right there,” Heck said. “We’ve always talked about goals and what the next thing is.”

Shortreed praised the care he has received through Milwaukee VA.

“I’m truly grateful for the high level of attention and care this team gives me,” he said. “I feel very fortunate, because I feel that with private insurance, I wouldn’t have these opportunities… I wouldn’t have the fitness journey I have now. I know I’d be a different guy, but for the negative.”

VA’s Office of Research and Development recently published three News Briefs highlighting research findings on improving cancer care, a robotic wheelchair system and Parkinson’s disease.

Veterans save almost $9,000 with localized cancer treatments

VA researchers in Ann Arbor, Mich., demonstrated that providing Veterans with local outpatient or in-home transfusion treatments for cancer saved Veterans nearly $9,000 in travel-related costs from a total of nearly 22,000 less miles over an 8-month period.

VA’s pilot “Close to Me” program provides cancer treatment at local VA community-based outpatient clinics or self-administered at home while supervised by an infusion nurse, rather than at infusion centers in large hospitals. The program enrolled 102 Veterans who lived an average of 53 miles from the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center and 16 miles from a community-based outpatient clinics. Researchers also found there was more than $400,000 in savings for VA based on drug price differences in VA versus community care. Patient satisfaction was high, with 99% treatment adherence and no serious adverse events. The pilot program showed delivering cancer transfusions locally to rural Veterans is both feasible and can lead to significant travel and cost savings. View the full study from “JCO Oncology Practice.”

New robotic system improves wheelchair transfers to bed

VA researchers from the Human Engineering Research Laboratory (HERL) created a robotics system to aid in transfers between a wheelchair and bed. The Powered Personal Transfer System (PPTS) consists of a custom powered wheelchair and hospital bed that dock together and use advanced robotics to safely allow transfer without the need for lifting. Wheelchair users and caregivers who tested the system found it easy to use and said it reduced their physical and mental workload. PPTS outperformed existing transfer methods, offering a potential solution to prevent injury and increase the independence of wheelchair users. Watch a demonstration of PPTS in action on the HERL website. View the full study from the “American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.”

Deep brain stimulation hits decade benchmark as Parkinson’s treatment

In the longest follow-up study to date, VA researchers showed deep brain stimulation continues to improve motor function in people with Parkinson’s disease 10 years into treatment.

Deep brain stimulation involves a device being surgically implanted into the brain to send electric signals to specific brain areas. Ten years after device implantation, a group of 156 patients with Parkinson’s disease had 22% and 33% improvements on a Parkinson’s disease rating scale compared to baseline, depending on what area of the brain was targeted. Both deep brain stimulation types resulted in significant long-term improvements in motor function, with the greatest improvement in tremors. However, non-motor symptoms such as cognitive decline continued to progress. The results confirm deep brain stimulation can have significant positive effects on motor function over the long term in patients with Parkinson’s disease. View the full study from “Frontiers in Neurology.”

How thinking about “the end” helps us build a stronger, more effective homelessness response system

Even if we could instantly provide housing for every homeless Veteran today, we would still face Veteran homelessness tomorrow. Why? Because homelessness is more complex than just providing housing; it intersects with financial troubles, physical and mental health issues, and employment challenges.

Understanding Veteran homelessness and how to end it

To truly end Veteran homelessness, we must not only house today’s homeless Veterans but also support them in overcoming these complex challenges to maintain their housing long-term. Additionally, we must have the capacity to house future homeless Veterans or, ideally, prevent them from becoming homeless in the first place.

Determining the resources needed to end Veteran homelessness

Accurately estimating the resources required involves understanding:

How many Veterans are currently homeless?

How many Veterans become homeless each year?

How many Veterans can be moved out of homelessness each year?

It’s inherently challenging to determine the exact number of homeless Veterans since we need to account for and provide services to individuals without a permanent address or direct means of contact.

The importance of by-name lists

Historically, VA has used the Point-in-Time (PIT) Count to assess the number of homeless Veterans. While helpful, this data takes time to analyze and often doesn’t account for new cases until the next count.

To improve accuracy and timeliness, VA launched Veteran by-name lists in November 2025. These lists are continuously updated and managed by VA and our One Team partners. They provide a real-time, comprehensive view of every homeless Veteran in a community, ensuring no one is overlooked and everyone receives timely assistance.

 By-name lists:

Identify Veterans experiencing homelessness..

Provide data on trends, such as the time it takes to house a Veteran.

Highlight resource gaps in specific communities.

Measure the rate of Veterans exiting and entering homelessness.

Although still a work in progress, these lists will soon help us accurately determine the ongoing need for services and better deploy resources to end Veteran homelessness.

Ongoing support for newly housed Veterans

Exiting homelessness is just the beginning of the journey for many Veterans. Newly housed Veterans often need support to navigate the transition to stable living. VA addresses these needs through case management, health care, treatment and employment assistance to prevent them from returning to homelessness.

True prevention also involves bolstering the social and economic foundations of communities, including housing affordability, fair wages and access to affordable health care—the essential components of a sustainable solution to Veteran homelessness.

VA’s commitment and your role

VA is dedicated to serving our nation’s Veterans, prioritizing resources to help them live fulfilling lives after experiencing homelessness. We aim to provide ongoing support through health care and other services to ensure all Veterans thrive.

Everyone has a role to play:

Veterans who are homeless or at risk, or those who know someone in need, can contact the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-424-3838.

Business owners can support by hiring Veterans.

Property owners can make a life-changing difference by renting to a Veteran in need.

Learn about VA programs

If you’re a homeless or at-risk Veteran or need to connect with a Veterans Justice Outreach Specialist, call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-424-3838.

Visit VA Homeless Programs to learn about housing initiatives and other programs that support Veterans exiting homelessness.

Find out how VA Homeless Programs provide the stability Veterans need to start their own businesses and contribute back to the community.

Get involved in efforts to house homeless Veterans.

Together, we can make a meaningful difference and work toward ending Veteran homelessness for good.

Navy Veteran’s century-long journey celebrated at Trinka Davis Veterans Village

Nearly 100 family, friends and fellow residents gathered on Jan. 12, 2026, at Trinka Davis Veterans Village Community Living Center (CLC) to celebrate an extraordinary milestone—the 100th birthday of Navy Veteran Raleigh Durden, Jr. The celebration honored not only a century of life, but a lifetime defined by service, faith, hard work and love of family.

Born in 1926, in Adel, Ga., Durden’s journey from a small farm to becoming a centenarian Veteran has been marked by dedication and perseverance. That spirit was evident as loved ones came together to reflect on his many accomplishments and share stories spanning generations. He and his wife Nellie raised four children and he’s now the proud grandfather of six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

During his service, Durden attained the rank of seaman. He worked closely with his ship’s captain, where he refined his culinary skills, an interest that began in his youth and stayed with him throughout his life. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to public service by working at the United States Postal Service for more than 35 years.

Dedication to service and community

The celebration also recognized Durden’s commitment to education and community. A 1950 graduate of Morris Brown College, he remained deeply connected to his alma mater and was a lifetime member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., proudly representing its values of brotherhood and service. His faith has been equally central to his life, reflected in decades of devoted service at Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Atlanta.

When asked about the secret to a long life, he credited his faith. “One of the most important things is reading the scriptures,” said Durden. Reflecting on reaching his 100th birthday, he added, “I thank God for allowing me to see this day. It’s truly a blessing to reach 100 years.”

Durden has resided at Trinka Davis Veteran Village CLC for more than 12 years and expressed deep appreciation for the staff. “They do a great job making this place feel like home,” he said.

Donna Wilson-Fant, social worker at the facility, a part of the Atlanta VA Health Care System, said Durden’s life and legacy reflected the enduring spirit of those who serve. “Mr. Durden’s journey stands as a testament to dedication, resilience and continued contribution well beyond military service,” she said. Wilson-Fant added, “It is an honor to serve not only Mr. Durden, but all the Veterans who call Trinka Davis Veteran Village CLC home. Our staff is committed to ensuring every Veteran is treated with dignity, respect and compassion.”

Throughout Black History Month (BHM), the Center for Minority Veterans (CMV) is honored to highlight the stories of Black Veterans whose commitment to community endures long after they hang up their uniforms. In this week’s “From Uniform to Unforgettable” feature, we recognize six extraordinary individuals who have turned their service into a lifelong legacy.

Carl McPherson Sr. | U.S. Army
Service span: Vietnam, Cold War, Gulf War, Post-9/11
With a career spanning 30 years and multiple defining eras of conflict, Carl McPherson Sr. rooted his service in leadership and mission readiness. As a Field Artillery leader, he held key responsibilities that strengthened units and shaped the soldiers under his command.
The essence of his service: McPherson’s greatest pride lies not in medals, but in mentorship. He cherishes the memory of watching those he led grow, develop and eventually step into leadership roles themselves. For him, service is a commitment to leaving people better than he found them—a value he carries forward today.

Enid Blanton | U.S. Air Force
Service span: Gulf War Era
Enid Blanton is proud of the resilience and lifelong friendships forged during her time in the Air Force—relationships she credits with shaping her character. Since transitioning to civilian life, she has embraced new roles as wife, mother and trailblazing entrepreneur.
The essence of her service: As the CEO and owner of Ancestry Cigars Inc., Blanton achieved a historic milestone as the first African American woman to hold a tobacco license in the State of Illinois. She views military service as a dedication to “making sure people can be free,” a principle she upholds through her continued support of Veteran-focused organizations.

Charles Allen, MD | National Guard/Reserve
Service span: Gulf War Era
Dr. Charles Allen served for 17 years as a pilot, embodying a role that demands absolute precision, trust and calm under pressure. His career highlights the diverse tapestry of Black Veteran service, demonstrating excellence in high-demand, technical specialties that support national readiness.
The essence of his service: Allen’s story is a testament to duty. Whether in the cockpit or the clinic, he brings skill and responsibility to every mission, representing the many professionals who have served with distinction across every branch and specialty.

Dr. Antwanisha Williamson | U.S. Navy
Service span: 18+ years
Dr. Antwanisha Williamson spent over 18 years supporting global missions and leading sailors through complex operational demands. She takes immense pride in having broken barriers as a female leader, “creating space, setting standards, and ensuring those who followed had clearer pathways to succeed.”
The essence of her service: Williamson views service as “both a calling and a catalyst for change.” After earning her doctorate researching the lived experiences of women Veterans, she now applies that knowledge as a leader in the NAACP and national advocacy circles. She designs programs that prioritize equity and access, proving that leadership and excellence have no single look.

Dennis May | U.S. Air Force
Service span: 1981–2007
Retired Colonel Dennis May’s career is defined by organizational excellence. Commanding the 17th Mission Support Squadron at Goodfellow AFB, he led his unit to be named “Best Mission Support Squadron” twice. Following his retirement, he brought this expertise to the VA.
The essence of his service: May revolutionized Veteran support by creating and leading the first-ever Veterans Employment Office at VA, a model that became a template across the federal government and drove VA’s Veteran employment to near-record highs. He retired as CMV’s own beloved deputy director. Today, he continues to give back as Vice President for Veterans Outreach with the Air Force Cadet Officer Mentor Association, living by the credo “Integrity first, service before self, excellence in all we do.”

Tee Marie Hanible | U.S. Marine Corps
Service span: 20 Years
Tee Marie Hanible’s 20-year career is a masterclass in leadership under pressure. Deploying to Iraq in 2003, she was the only woman in one of the first units to deploy, a testament to her courage and trailblazing spirit.
The essence of her service: Since retiring, Hanible has become a force for community wellness as the Founder and CEO of Operation Heroes Connect, a nonprofit focused on youth development and support for displaced Veterans. As bestselling author of “The Warrior Code” and a TV personality, she remains a passionate grassroots activist. Her commitment to “protect American citizens and defend the Constitution” is a vow she carries long after the uniform has come off.

Call to action

From Uniform to Unforgettable celebrates Veterans whose journeys deserve to be heard, honored and remembered. If you are a Veteran, or know a Veteran whose story should be featured, please submit (or nominate them) at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/cmvveteranspotlight.

As a First Impressions volunteer

Donna Majeskie has a story of compassion that blossomed from the daily struggles she and her mother faced while caring for her Veteran father.

From navigating VA appointments to maneuvering wheelchairs, these challenges planted the seed of empathy that led to a journey of dedicated volunteerism.

Majeskie is a First Impression Curbside Assistance volunteer at the Minneapolis VA, having accumulated nearly 500 hours of volunteer service since she started four years ago. In this role, she assists Veterans by helping them get in and out of vehicles, providing wheelchairs and guiding them to their destinations.

Majeskie’s father was a career Air Force officer who received treatment at VA. The compassionate care he received at VA during the last three years of his life ignited a fire within her to give back and serve others.

Work with meaning

Majeskie specifically chose the curbside work because of her own experience with her mother while transporting her father. She recognized that many women were bringing their spouses to appointments and sometimes struggled with parking, getting them in and out of the car, and locating a wheelchair to use during medical center visits.

After retiring early from a 30-year career at Kraft Heinz, Majeskie dedicated herself to offering a helping hand to Veterans and their families at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center.

The Squaxin Tribe's MOU signing now allows members to have access to a low-interest NADL loan to buy, build, or renovate a home on the federal trust lands of the tribe.

VA Native American Direct Loan staff Casandra Kelting and Justin Stephenson recently traveled to the southernmost inlets of the Salish Sea in Washington to meet with seven bands of the Squaxin Island Tribe who, after signing an MOU, will now have access to the low-interest Native American Direct Loan Program (NADL) to buy, build or renovate a home on the federal trust lands of the tribe, thus making homeownership more affordable.

Known as the “People of the Water” for their close relationship with the sea and sea life, the Squaxin Island Tribe has more than 550 members, including many Veterans and service members.

After the signing ceremony, Kelting and Stephenson toured the tribal lands, where Vietnam Veteran and Squaxin Island Tribal member John Krise showed them the tribe’s Veteran memorial, which displays a paddle reaching out of the water to represent each Veteran who has served. “The tour was very informative, and it was apparent how much pride and admiration the tribe has for their members who have served our nation,” said Stephenson. “It was our pleasure to be able to inform them of the NADL program, which some of them will hopefully use to buy a home.”

Following the tour, Kelting and Stephenson attended the tribe’s annual emergency preparedness event, where they distributed NADL information, answered questions and engaged interested Veterans.

“As a Native American, I know what it means to these communities when VA is able to sign NADL MOUs and then open the door for Native American Veterans to buy, build and renovate homes,” said Kelting. “It is a win for the Veteran and the tribe, because housing deficits are alleviated when Veterans are able to secure a NADL to own a home. I’m truly honored to work for VA, where I can help my fellow Native Americans, like those in the Squaxin Tribe, become homeowners.”

Native American Veterans have a long and proud tradition of military service, and they continue to serve at higher rates than many other demographic groups today. Due to this, Congress passed Public Law 102-547 in 1992, which established the NADL program for Native Americans, who have historically had trouble accessing mortgages to buy homes on federal trust lands. In addition to Native Americans, Native Hawaiians and Alaska Natives, it also enables access for Pacific Islanders—which include American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam. Since the program’s inception, VA has signed 118 Memorandums of Understanding with tribal governments.

VA’s NADL team maintains a vigorous schedule to engage Native American communities throughout the United States and its territories at events like the Squaxin MOU signing to inform Native American Veterans of the benefit they have earned.

In addition to a NADL, Native American Veterans can also apply for a VA-guaranteed home loan for use on fee-simple properties (full and complete ownership of land outside federal trust lands). Those in the Native American community can learn more about the NADL program by visiting the NADL website or attending an informational session. Also, VA recently created a video to serve as a guide for tribes to understand the MOU process. The video can be accessed on the VA Loan Guaranty Training Website under ‘Available Training – Native American Direct Loans.’ VA is committed to working with tribal communities throughout the country to expand the NADL program.

Our bodies and brains aren’t optimized for life in the modern world. Our eyes, necks and brains are strained by computer screens, smart phones, AI and other modern advances. Technology can take its toll on our body, mind and spirit!

Neck and head pain are a common issue that arises with technology use, but, there is relief! When you’re feeling pain, you can use your fingertips with acupressure!

Acupressure has been used for thousands of years to help people manage pain and other symptoms in the body. This 4-minute routine will show you why. Licensed acupuncturist Dr. Lisa Lourey from Omaha VA Medical Center walks you through a self-care routine that may help with headaches and neck pain. Practice often and your self-massage and acupressure skills will grow.

Use this routine when you experience pain. Use it regularly to help prevent episodes of neck and head pain. As you become more familiar with the acupressure points, you may find that they are simple to find, and you can use this portable self-care technique anytime you need it.

Precautions

Avoid massaging areas of swelling, redness, rash or broken skin. If you have a bleeding disorder condition or take medication to thin your blood, use light pressure. Do not use acupressure during pregnancy.

Tips

Wash hands thoroughly before and after practice. Remove jewelry, such as watches, rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces. Loosen restrictive clothing. Be in a comfortable position.

Find your local Whole Health team

Contact your local Whole Health Facility Contact for more information about complementary and integrative health services that may be available as part of your care plan.

VA has options for you

Esketamine, a novel and mental health treatment therapy, is being used across VA for Veterans with treatment-resistant depression and acute suicidality.

Esketamine is administered under the supervision of trained clinicians. The therapy is delivered via an intranasal device in the form of a spray. Patients are treated in a clinic where they are observed by a medical team for two hours. After the two-hour monitoring period, they are cleared prior to discharge with approved transportation.

“Esketamine is one of the most effective FDA-approved antidepressant therapies available today,” said Dr. Sarah Canoy, a psychiatrist at Truman VA in Columbia, Mo. “Its use is especially effective for those experiencing treatment-resistant depression. Since we began offering this option in 2022, we have been able to increase its availability to our Veterans, especially after we opened a new dedicated treatment room in January 2024.”

How it works

“Typically, esketamine treatments are given twice a week for the first month per protocol,” Canoy continued. “If the patient’s symptoms improve, treatments are continued. The frequency of the maintenance phase is based on the patient’s response to the medication and the continued improvement of depressive symptoms.

“For people who haven’t had success with other antidepressant therapies, esketamine may be another tool that offers them a chance to see what it’s like to have significantly reduced or no depression. It also provides positive reinforcement that they can feel better with the right treatment. I’m very happy and excited that we can provide this level of care for our Veterans.”

Veterans interested in the esketamine treatment can ask for a referral from their mental health provider.

Here’s your chance to showcase your creativity and honor America’s Veterans through art. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Veterans Day National Committee are now accepting submissions for the 2026 Veterans Day Poster Contest.

Deadline: All entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (EDT) on April 1, 2026.

This contest is open to everyone—professional and amateur artists alike. Your design should reflect this year’s theme:
“Veterans Helping Veterans and Their Families.”

Why Participate?

The winning poster will be distributed to VA facilities, military installations and communities nationwide. It will also serve as the cover of the official program for the Veterans Day National Observance at Arlington National Cemetery on Nov. 11, 2026.

Looking back: Last year’s winner

In 2025, the Veterans Day National Committee received more than 180 entries from artists across the country. The winning design, “Unified by Service,” was created by Jeremy D. Carpenter, an Army Veteran from Lowell, Ark. His artwork visually united all uniformed services under one flag and one purpose, paying tribute to Veterans of every generation.

Carpenter shared that art is his way to reflect on experiences and express meaning: “It pays tribute to all Veterans regardless of when or where they served, and it emphasizes that service to the nation is not confined to one uniform, one battlefield or one generation,” he said.

Submission Guidelines

Before you start creating, please review the new design submission guidelines for 2026 to ensure your artwork meets technical requirements. Successful designs are typically simple, with minimal imagery and text.

To view past winning posters, visit the Veterans Day Poster Gallery.

How to Submit

Send electronic versions of your design as jpg/jpeg images or PDF files to vetsday@va.gov.

Questions? Contact the Veterans Day Coordinator at vetsday@va.gov.

Thank you to all who have shared their creativity to honor Veterans. We look forward to seeing your submissions for the 2026 Veterans Day Poster Contest!

For many Veterans, the transition to civilian life can be filled with challenges, especially when traditional therapies fall short. Tara Pipia, a Veteran of the Army National Guard, found herself in such a predicament.

Despite trying various treatments like exposure therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and psychotherapy, nothing seemed to alleviate her symptoms of PTSD. That was until she discovered the Puppies Assisting Wounded Service Members (PAWS) pilot program at VA Palo Alto.

“What motivated me was the fact that the other modalities didn’t work for me,” Pipia shared. “I spoke to one of the health care administrators about what other options I had, and she offered me to try the PAWS program.”

The PAWS program involves Veterans helping to train service dogs for other Veterans. For Pipia, it offered a hands-on experience that felt different from anything she’d tried before. She learned practical training techniques, such as using the word “yes” to reinforce positive behavior. One of the most meaningful aspects of the program for Pipia was how it helped her become more aware of her emotions.

“I learned that dogs are capable of amazing things and that our energy affects the animal. If I’m in an anxious state, my dog is going to respond to that. It makes me want to be better, so maybe I can self-regulate on my own now so that I don’t affect my dog,” she explained.

Finding her “why”

The program also gave Pipia a sense of purpose and connection.

“At the time, I wasn’t sleeping well, and being part of PAWS gave me something to look forward to—even on days I wasn’t there. I enjoyed seeing the other Veterans and the instructors, who were calm and supportive. The dogs added to that peaceful atmosphere,” she said.

Pipia’s journey with the PAWS program highlights the unique benefits of service animals for Veterans. The program not only helped her but also has the potential to benefit many others who might be struggling with similar issues.

“I think dogs are a great healing modality because maybe for other people it does work to talk about your problems, but for me, sometimes you just don’t want to talk about it,” she reflected.

Pipia continues to advocate for the PAWS program and hopes it will expand to reach more Veterans across the country.

It’s never too late to apply for VA health care you’ve earned. If you are a Veteran or know a Veteran who has not yet applied for their VA health care benefits, learn how to get started.

Honoring heroes through volunteerism

From Feb. 8-14, 2026, VA invites everyone to honor hospitalized Veterans at VA medical centers across the country during National Salute to Veteran Patients Week. Held each year during the week of Valentine’s Day, this initiative is a heartfelt way for the nation to express its gratitude for the sacrifices our Veterans have made.

A tradition of service and appreciation

Since 1978, National Salute to Veteran Patients Week has been a cornerstone event for VA. This special week is dedicated to honoring Veteran patients by encouraging communities to engage with local VA facilities. During this week, volunteers bring joy to hospitalized Veterans by delivering Valentine’s gifts and cards.

For over 80 years, volunteers have played a vital role in helping VA keep America’s promise to its Veterans. These compassionate individuals provide essential services and support, making sure Veterans feel valued and cared for. As we look forward to this meaningful week, VA extends a heartfelt thanks to all volunteers and community members who tirelessly support this mission. Their efforts not only bring comfort to Veterans but also strengthen the bond between VA and the communities it serves.

How you can get involved

National Salute to Veteran Patients Week is not just about looking back; it’s a chance for all Americans to actively support our Veteran patients. Here are some ways you can get involved:

Volunteer your time and skills: Connect with your local VA center to see how you can make a difference. Whether it’s assisting with events or lending a helping hand, your contribution matters.

Send Valentine’s cards: Bring a smile to a Veteran’s face by sending Valentine’s cards to your local VA facility.

Spread the word: Share the importance of this week with friends and family to inspire others to get involved.

For more information on volunteer opportunities or to join in honoring our Veterans’ service, reach out to your local Center for Development & Civic Engagement (CDCE) office.

Make a lasting impact

National Salute to Veteran Patients Week is a powerful reminder of the gratitude we owe to our Veterans. By participating in this initiative, you help bring comfort and recognition to those who have given so much for our country. Let’s come together to ensure every Veteran feels appreciated and honored, not just during this special week, but every day of the year.

Be a hero in your community

With the new year, you and your loved ones can make a difference by pledging to donate blood. It’s a simple act that saves lives. VA supports blood drives nationwide. Donating blood is a simple yet essential act that helps save lives, and VA is once again supporting blood drives across the country.

Someone in the U.S. requires blood every two seconds, according to the Red Cross. Because it can take 24 to 48 hours to process, test and prepare a pint of blood for transfusion, the nation’s blood supply depends on the regular generosity and diversity of blood donors.

VA is asking that healthy individuals of all blood types, backgrounds and ethnicities consider donating as soon as possible.

“On the battlefield, I trusted my brothers and sisters in uniform,” said Ruby Rose Magbanua from the VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System. “In the hospital, I trusted the strangers who donated the blood that saved my life.”

Ongoing donations make a difference

Regular donations ensure the availability of the nation’s blood supply for Veterans and patients in need. VA works with community blood centers around the country to meet the needs of the 1-in-7 patients entering a hospital who requires a blood transfusion.

If you are healthy, we encourage you to visit America’s Blood Centers or the American Red Cross to schedule an appointment at a VA blood drive or blood collection facility near you.

Veterans, their family members and friends are all encouraged to participate in this nationwide life-saving effort. You can help up to three people through one blood donation. Contact your local VA medical center to learn more.

Roll up your sleeve and donate at VA today!

Veterans bring unmatched experience, leadership and dedication to the workforce. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is proud to be one of the largest employers of Veterans in the nation, offering meaningful careers that allow former service members to continue their mission in a new way, as well as finding support in getting started on a civilian job search. Here, we’ll provide tips to help Veterans kick off their job hunt, discuss how to frame military experience for civilian careers, and explore available opportunities at VA. Join the VA team and apply your skills in a career that impacts the lives of Veterans each and every day.

Navigate USAJOBS with ease

USAJOBS offers a few key features to help Veterans narrow their job search and find jobs specifically targeting Veteran candidates. Government agencies use hiring paths to tell USAJOBS who they’re looking for when they’re hiring—like Veterans. Veterans can easily find jobs they qualify for by selecting the “Veterans” option in the “Hiring path” filter or by looking for a green shield icon within the “This job is open to” section of the job announcement.

If you’re a Veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and were separated under honorable conditions, you may also be eligible for Veterans’ Preference, as well as other Veteran-specific hiring options, like Veterans Recruitment Appointment.

When claiming Veterans’ Preference, you must provide a copy of your DD-214, certificate of release or discharge from active duty or other acceptable documentation. You can easily upload and save a copy of your DD-214 to USAJOBS so that it will be readily accessible as you apply to federal jobs.

Military experience for a civilian workforce

Military service can translate into numerous skills that federal employers like VA value and need. In the military, did you ever quickly find a solution that impacted your whole team? On a resume, this skill could read as “problem-solving under pressure.” Or did you maintain a complicated artillery system? This could be “technical proficiency.” By reframing the work you did in the military, you’ll find that many of your skills will resonate with civilian employers and match their hiring requirements.

Find a rewarding VA career

VA is always looking for qualified candidates to join our team and is dedicated to helping Veterans build their careers. If you’re a Veteran searching for your next opportunity, check out these hot jobs below:

Medical Supply Technician, Charleston, SC

Psychiatrist, Augusta, GA

Dental Laboratory Technician, Dallas, TX

Radiologist, Tulsa, OK

Know your numbers for heart health

February is American Heart Month, a time to focus on heart health. Heart disease and stroke affects women of all ages, and it remain the leading causes of death for women in the United States.

Heart disease risk can change during certain life stages for women. For example, if a woman has gestational diabetes or high blood pressure during pregnancy, her risk for heart disease later in life increases. And, for all women, heart disease risk increases after menopause. Women Veterans have higher rates of some heart disease risk factors, like diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking, than the general population and face added risks due to stress, trauma and other service-related factors.

VA is committed to helping women Veterans lower their risk through awareness, education and support. Each year, we collaborate with the American Heart Association (AHA) to support the “Go Red for Women” campaign and “National Wear Red Day,” observed this year on Feb. 6. Men and women are encouraged to wear red as a visible sign of support for heart health awareness.

Know your numbers

One of the best ways to be heart smart is to know and understand four key health numbers—total cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index (BMI). Having these numbers in check and at healthy levels can lower your risk for heart disease and stroke.

Total cholesterol

Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like substance found in the blood and cells. When cholesterol builds up over time, it hardens and turns to plaque that can block arteries and lead to a heart attack. High cholesterol usually has no symptoms, so regular blood tests are important. Your provider can discuss what healthy numbers are for you. You can lower your cholesterol by eating a healthy low-fat diet that is high in fruits and vegetables.

Blood pressure

Blood pressure measures how hard the blood pushes against the arteries in your heart. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, also has no symptoms. Left untreated, it can damage your arteries, which can increase your risk of heart attack, heart failure and stroke. Your blood pressure should be checked annually but regular at-home monitoring is also recommended. For non-pregnant women, blood pressure readings less than 120/80 mm Hg are considered normal. You can lower your blood pressure by managing your weight, being active and decreasing the salt in your diet.

Blood sugar

Blood sugar measures the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Your blood sugar can be checked with a simple blood test. High levels can lead to diabetes and increase heart disease risk, if left untreated. Normal fasting blood glucose level is lower than 100 mg/dl.

Body mass index (BMI)

Body mass index (BMI) estimates body fat based on your weight in relation to your height. Being overweight or obese raises the risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. A person’s ideal body weight varies by gender, age, height and frame, so it’s best discuss healthy ranges with your provider.

Know the signs of a cardiac event

Heart attacks can look different in women than in men. Symptoms women Veterans may experience include:

Chest discomfort: Pressure, tightness or pain that might not feel severe but should not be ignored.

Shortness of breath: Difficulty breathing with or without chest discomfort.

Pain elsewhere: Pain in the arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach that may feel like a deep ache.

Unusual fatigue: Sudden, unexplained exhaustion.

Nausea or vomiting: Often mistaken for a stomach issue.

Lightheadedness or dizziness: Feeling faint or unsteady.

Cold sweats: A clammy or unexpected sweat.

General illness: A vague sense of something being wrong.

Women often attribute symptoms to less serious causes, leading to delays in seeking care, so it is important to be aware of your symptoms.

Act today

Be heart smart and take the time to understand your numbers. Commit to eating well, staying active, managing stress and getting enough sleep. VA is here to help. Talk with your provider today about your personal risk factors and how VA can support your heart health.

VA’s Office of Research and Development recently published three News Briefs highlighting research findings on the genetics behind schizophrenia, burn pit exposure and prostate cancer risk.

Study finds shared genetics in schizophrenia risk

VA researchers identified more than 100 ancestry-independent regions of the human genome that influence schizophrenia risk in people of African ancestry, in a landmark study that highlights the shared biological underpinnings of the disease.

The researchers analyzed data from more than 13,500 Veterans with schizophrenia and 65,000 controls of African ancestry from the VA Million Veteran Program. While the findings showed much of the genetic risk for schizophrenia is shared across different ancestries, the researchers also identified genetic risk factors unique to people of African ancestry. The findings address a longstanding gap in genetic research and highlight the importance of including diverse study populations to better understand schizophrenia and other diseases. View the full study from “Nature.”

Burn pit exposure tied to lung carbon buildup

A study by a team that included a VA Eastern Colorado researcher found Veterans with a history of exposure to military burn pits had three times the level of carbon particles in their lungs compared to unexposed individuals.

The study involved biopsies from 24 Veterans with lung disease compared with samples from tobacco smokers and healthy nonsmokers. Veterans who reported burn pit exposure had carbon material in their airways at levels similar to smokers. The findings offer direct evidence of a link between burn pit smoke exposure to lasting changes in Veterans’ lungs. View the full study from “Scientific Reports.”

Genetic model helps predict prostate cancer risk

VA Million Veteran Program (MVP) researchers created a genetic prediction model that may more accurately predict patients’ risk for prostate cancer.

The researchers used data from more than 585,000 male Veterans who volunteered for MVP to create the P-CARE scale, which considers family history, genetic ancestry and a polygenic risk score based on a wide array of genetic variants. Patients with the highest 20% of P-CARE scores had nearly a three-times higher risk of prostate cancer compared to those with a median score, while those in the lowest 20% had only 40% the risk. Validation in a separate group of patients showed the P-CARE scale improved the accuracy of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, a blood test frequently used to screen for prostate cancer. The model is now being tested in a clinical trial of precision prostate cancer screening. View the full study from “Nature Cancer.”

Further advancing learner pathways, West Virginia joins national collaborative building on Credential WV

The goal is to create sustainable, statewide framework that makes credentials more portable, skills more visible, and transitions more seamless for learners. Higher education leaders in West Virginia announced today that the state will join the Learning Mobility Collaborative (LMC), a nationwide movement supported by Education Design Lab with key partners including AACRAO and Strada Education Foundation. This movement is an effort…

Making the changes to better your health

Big or small changes can have a big impact on Veterans receiving treatment for mental health or SUD.

Big or small can lead to positive growth

Recognizing the stigma that often surrounds substance use and mental health, VA is committed to removing barriers so that every Veteran who seeks help has access to a wide range of evidence-based services. These include harm reduction strategies, medications for addiction treatment and other proven approaches tailored to individual needs.

“Our approach right now is very much a ‘come as you are’ approach,” said Dr. Jesse Barglow, psychologist and section chief for the downtown Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Clinic at the Los Angeles VA Medical Center. “We really want to work with anyone who is dealing with substance use issues and wants to make a change, no matter how big or how small.”

Research supports this flexible “meet-them-where-they-are” philosophy. The National Institute on Drug Abuse highlights that patient-centered care, use of effective medications, and reducing barriers and stigma are associated with better outcomes for Veterans living with substance use disorders.

Dr. David Lawrence, the clinic’s medical director, emphasized the breadth of services available: “We offer all FDA-approved treatments for substance use disorders, including methadone and buprenorphine for opioid addiction, as well as medications for alcohol and stimulant use. In addition to medication, we provide trauma-informed therapy, peer support, harm reduction tools such as fentanyl test strips, and contingency management programs that reward progress.”

Additionally, Veterans are not required to be abstinent to receive care, and they will not be turned away for continued use. Instead, the team meets each Veteran where they are, helping them define their own goals, whether that means complete sobriety or simply reducing harm.

“We’re trying to undo a lot of the rigidity and judgment that has historically been part of addiction treatment,” said Barglow. “We don’t require urine tests. We don’t punish people for relapsing. We want to build relationships based on trust and support.”

Matthew Ayala, a 37-year-old Navy Veteran, struggled with alcohol use, which began after he left the military due to the stress he carried and a sense of identity loss while transitioning into civilian life. Like many Veterans, Ayala’s substance use was a kind of self-medication he developed to cope with underlying pain and distress.

“I had the realization that my coping was really costing my health, my sanity, my peace and my presence, mainly my presence as a father and a husband. I was a new father at the time and I decided, for me, recovering is not about quitting something, it’s more about building something better,” said Ayala.

A network of support

With the help of his family, friends and VA, he turned his life around and embraced sobriety. In the span of approximately six months, he completed the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at VA where he took classes in mindfulness, anger management, PTSD and courses focused specifically on alcohol use. He got a new job that he loves—building emergency vehicles such as police cars—and was able to rent a larger home more suitable for his family.

“I opened my mind and my heart up to VA because they opened theirs to mine… I felt valued, I felt cared about, and so I gave it a shot,” said Ayala.

Ayala encourages other Veterans who may be hesitant to seek help to consider giving it a try.

“You can jump into a class and not say anything to anybody, and they don’t care if you have anything to say or not. You just get to look and listen and see if you like it,” he added.

It’s never too late to apply for VA health care you’ve earned. If you are a Veteran or know a Veteran who has not yet applied for their VA health care benefits, learn how to get started.

As a Veteran or service member, your VA home loan is one of the most powerful benefits you’ve earned. If you have a VA home loan, you have probably received unsolicited offers to refinance your mortgage that may sound too good to be true.

Many of these solicitations claim:

Skipped mortgage payments.

Escrow refunds.

Extremely low interest rates.

Thousands of dollars in cash back.

No out-of-pocket costs.

Repeated refinancing with no waiting period.

Guaranteed approval regardless of credit score.

The solicitations may appear to be from trustworthy organizations or even VA. Some of these solicitations may also look like it’s from your mortgage servicing company (the company you send your monthly mortgage payment to), a common tactic since borrowers are more likely to act if they believe a solicitation came from their current mortgage company. Here are some red flags to watch out for.

Offers to skip mortgage payments

VA prohibits a lender from advertising the skipping of payments as a means of obtaining cash in a VA Interest Rate Reduction Refinancing Loan (IRRRL). In this scenario, the borrower is not skipping any payments. The principal and interest owed between the date the previous loan was paid off and the date the new loan begins will be carried over into the new loan, which will incur interest and increase your new loan balance.

Offers to receive an escrow refund

Lenders may promise that you will receive a certain amount from your escrow account (a secure holding place for money used to manage payments for your property taxes and homeowners insurance); however, the “refund” is the amount left in your account at the time of loan closing, which may be much less than the amount you were promised.

Some may have problems with new escrow accounts and have had to make higher monthly mortgage payments to cover an escrow shortfall. Protect yourself by contacting your mortgage company to verify your escrow balance.

Low-interest rates without clear details

Lenders may advertise low-interest rate offers, implying broad eligibility, but often, the rates are for a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage or an adjustable-rate mortgage, or require paying discount points to receive the advertised rate.

If you’re in the market for a home loan, shop around and compare terms with various VA-approved lenders.

Aggressive sales tactics

You may receive offers that urge you to “act now” or promise “fast approval.” You may be pressured to refinance your VA loan only a month or two after you’ve closed on your current VA loan.

Keep in mind that many of these advertised “savings” are costs that will increase your new home loan balance. Before proceeding with an offer, consider the long-term and short-term benefits and consequences.

If you receive suspicious solicitations or experience mortgage issues, VA is available to support you. Submit a ServiceNow inquiry or call VA at (877) 827-3702. Submit a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau online or by calling (855) 411 -CFPB (2372).

An Air Force Veteran prepares for a marathon in Greece while continuing his recovery from a spinal cord injury

Air Force Veteran Auston Duncan is training for a marathon in Greece as he continues recovering from a spinal cord injury. He plans to dedicate the race to VA as a way of saying thank you.

“If not for VA’s support and commitment, I’m not sure where I would be,” Duncan said. “I’m not sure I’d even be alive.”

World record attempt

Duncan is training for the 43rd Athens Marathon, “The Authentic,” which follows the historic route from Marathon to Athens. The marathon will also serve as a Guinness World Record attempt.

The injury

At the time of the injury, Duncan was serving on active duty in the Air Force. The injury happened during his first time snowboarding at Keystone Mountain in Colorado.

He flew off a hill, fell about 30 feet and landed in the trees. The fall fractured his T8 and T9 vertebrae, broke 2 ribs and punctured a lung.

Relearning movement

After his injury, Duncan was sent to Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., which specializes in spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

Early sessions focused on control and coordination, including exercises such as moving a ball around his body while seated. By the end of his stay, Duncan was walking up and down a short flight of stairs.

“A part of me will always be with Craig,” he said, of the hospital.

Finding structure with VA

<img decoding="async" width="464" height="825" src="https://news.va.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2026/01/Auston-Duncan-Warrior-Games.png?w=464" alt="Two men in blue Air Force uniforms stand smiling with arms around each other.

Duncan left Craig Hospital in February 2022.

Without the structure of rehabilitation, his recovery slowed. He struggled mentally and emotionally while learning to live with a life-altering injury without constant support.

He describes that period as the hardest part of his recovery.

“I needed help getting my life reorganized and figuring out what mattered again,” he shared.

He left active duty in 2023. That same year, he enrolled in VA health care. He began receiving care through the Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders Clinic at VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System, and started working with a counselor and a primary care provider.

“No matter our circumstances or our past, we’re more capable than we think,” he added. “New doors open when we stay open to change.”

He hopes finishing the race shows others what’s possible, with or without an injury.

If you need help

Veterans in crisis can call 988 and select 1, text 838255 or chat online to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

Support is free, confidential and available 24/7. Enrolled Veterans can talk with their VA care team about mental health and suicide prevention services.

Some stories don’t just show us what service looks like, they show us what endurance looks like, too. Take this month’s “From Uniform to Unforgettable” spotlight, a celebration of the life and service of Marine Corps Veteran Benjamin Summers, Jr.

Summers grew up in Philadelphia during World War II and remembered seeing Marines in his neighborhood. He knew with certainty that that was what he wanted for himself. Later, though still in high school, he joined a Marine Corps Reserve unit in 1952. He wanted to go active duty, but his father stepped in and made sure he finished school first. While others encouraged him to take the college route, he chose a different path, one grounded in purpose and service.

Summers served in North Carolina, California, Arizona and multiple tours in Japan. He served during the Korean War era and later during the Vietnam era. He began in the infantry and later transitioned into aviation ordnance—work that demanded technical skill, precision and trust. Later, he served as a recruiter in his hometown and eventually became an area supervisor for the entire city of Philadelphia. Of all his jobs and tours, recruiting was where he could positively guide young people toward opportunity and growth, and he never missed a quota. One of the more significant moments of his service was when he walked—in uniform—into one of his old schools and was recognized by a teacher from his childhood.

A life grounded in purpose and service sometimes means working through loss—a thing many service members and Veterans know all too well. While stationed at Camp Lejeune, the Summers family was exposed to the base’s contaminated water supply, a crisis that has affected countless Veterans and loved ones over time. Summers lost his wife in 2017, on the morning of their 59th wedding anniversary. And he lost both his son and daughter between seven months in 2022. His last surviving daughter is also fighting cancer and lives nearby, close enough for him to stay present and involved in her care.

Summers retired from the Marine Corps in 1984, having earned the rank of sergeant major. But his commitment to service didn’t end there. After retirement, he worked for the Postal Service for more than 16 years. After seeking care through VA, he received a 100% service-connected disability. Today, he remains active and independent, and he’s approaching an incredible milestone: turning 91 in May 2026.

When asked what military service meant to him, his answer was simple and unwavering: “It meant one thing: That I was a Marine.”

For many Veterans, like Summers, service isn’t something that ends. It’s part of who they are.

The Center for Minority Veterans (CMV) Spotlight is a storytelling campaign that honors the lives, service and lasting impact of minority Veterans. Through brief features, photos and first-person reflections, we highlight Veterans across backgrounds, eras and branches.

Throughout the year, CMV Spotlight will also feature Veterans during key affinity months, including Black History Month (February); Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (May); Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15), andNative American and Alaska Native Heritage Month (November).

West Virginia ski season off to excellent start with all five resorts now open

Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Tourism is bringing a taste of the mountains to the capital city this weekend at the Dirty Birds Light the Night event. Guests visiting GoMart Ballpark today, Friday, December 19, through Sunday, December 21, will experience the unforgettable thrill of gliding down a snowy slope with West Virginia’s interactive ski simulator, included with the price of admission.

“Our interactive ski simulator gives guests of all ages a fun, hands-on way to learn to ski and discover why the Mountain State is the perfect place for winter adventure,” said West Virginia Department of Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby. “With authentic skiing and snowboarding, snowtubing, off-roading trails, and the East Coast’s longest sled run, West Virginia offers winter fun for everyone.”

From the innovative simulator that provides guests of all ages a hands-on introduction to skiing and snowboarding to West Virginia winter essentials such as wool socks, s’mores kits, tote bags, and stickers, attendees will be immersed in the magic of Almost Heaven at every turn. Families will especially love the picture-perfect photo op built around a vintage West Virginia ski-lift bench.

Bringing the West Virginia Slopes to Pittsburgh

As part of an effort to bring in tourists from out-of-state to take part in West Virginia’s ski season, the Department of Tourism shared a glimpse of skiing in the Mountain State with more than 80,000 guests at Pittsburgh’s annual Highmark Light Up Night last month.
